Violet Moon Howey is the daughter of Shameless actor, Steve Howey and former actress and model, Sarah Shahi.

Violet was born on March 1, 2015, in Sherman Oaks, California.

Has Two Brothers

Violet Moon Howey is raised alongside her two brothers: Knox Blue Howey and William Wolf Howey. Knox, her twin brother, is two hours younger than her. Her elder brother, William was born in July 2009.

Home Birth

Violet Moon Howey and her brothers were all born at home instead of in the hospital. While talking about the reason for opting for home birth, Sarah revealed that she believes in the body’s natural ability to give birth. In addition, she said she wanted to deny the idea that women don’t know how to give birth and always need doctors, epidurals, and Pitocin.

She and her ex-husband decided to have a natural birth after watching a documentary called The Business of Being Born.

You have more control during home birth and with hospital births, there is a system in place and we didn’t like the whole system. [Sarah] did not like the idea of being injected with stuff and having a c-section.

In December 2020, Howey explained that they delivered the babies with the help of a doula and a licensed OB/GYN. He also believed that home births are “not for everybody.”

Didn’t Have An Easy Birth

During her birth, the cord wrapped around her neck twice rendering her unconscious, blue, and not breathing. The attendee doctor at home birth began flicking her feet immediately after seeing her, and shortly after, Violet began screaming out her first cry.

On the other hand, her twin brother had a rather unusual incoming; feet first.

Meaning of Her Name

Steve Howey and Sarah Shahi’s fondness for “Ruby” and “Olive” led to Violet’s name. Her maiden name Moon is apparently her maternal grandmother’s maiden name. In the beginning, her parents were going to name her Moon but later on, decided it was better as a middle name.

Moon is the English translation of Sarah’s mom’s name. We were going to name her Moon, but we decided that was better as a middle name. We liked Ruby and Olive — we liked colors for a girl — and then I came up with Violet.

Parents are no Longer Together

Violet Moon Howey’s parents Steve Howey and Sarah Shahi first met in 2004 when they guest-starred on an episode of the former’s show, Reba. Soon they started dating and got engaged in 2007. After two years, they got married in Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, after more than a decade, they decided to part ways on April 14, 2020, and divorced in 2021.

After much thought and consideration, we have decided to end our marriage. We are so grateful for the past 10 years together and proud of our children that we’ve raised. As we enter into this new phase of our lives, our priority will remain coparenting our children with so much love, mutual respect and friendship. And though our relationship is changing, we are committed to continuing our lives as a loving family.

After the divorce, the former pair share joint legal and physical custody of their kids.
