Mahl was born on January 15, 1965, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born at the same hospital as her ex-husband. Her parents are John and Pat Mahl. She has a sister named Debbie Mahl.

Sandy Mahl was married to Garth Brooks for 15 years. They walked down the aisle on May 24, 1986.
The couple first met at the Tumbleweed Ballroom bar in Stillwater, Oklahoma, near Oklahoma State University. Garth was a bouncer there and Sandy was in the middle of a fight. However, Sandy claimed that they met on the dance floor.
Since both of them were Oklahoma State University students, they lived in neighboring dorms. That might be the reason why they walked around the college on their first date.
Divorced after 15 Years
Sandy Mahl and Garth Brooks separated in December 2001. The primary cause of their divorce was Garth’s busy career.
He’d be gone eight to 10 weeks at a time. He’d come home, and there would be number-one parties, or shows, or CMAs, or ACMs, American Music Awards, so it was constanly going. But, we both grew apart really, really quickly.

Mother of Three
Garth and Sandy have become parents to three children, all daughters.
They are the greatest joy and the greatest heartache you’ll ever have. The saying is, as long as your babes are healthy, everything else you can deal with. If they have Ds, if they flunk, you deal with it. You can introduce them to the Lord, teach them manners, teach them to believe in themselves, but the truth is, they’re going to be who they’re going to be.

After their parents’ divorce, the children were fortunate enough to spend time with both of their parents.
They saw both their parents in the morning and both their parents in the evening, and for 14 years. That was how we ran it, because we knew it was right for those kids. If you did what was right for the kids, you were going to do what was right for you. It was simple.

Sandy Mahl was a credited songwriter. She has written a number of songs for her husband, Garth Brooks.
Mahl has written a total of two songs for her husband. The first one was I’ve Got a Good Thing Going, in 1989. In 1992, she wrote That Summer. The song ranked #1 on the Billboard Country Charts in 1993.
Career Post-Divorce
After her divorce, Mahl has become the co-founder of Wild Heart Ranch in Rogers Country, Oklahoma. She has been involved with wildlife rehabilitation.
Sandy, pasisonate about wildlife rehabilitation, jumped on board to get licensed by the State and assist with the wokr of raising hundreds of infant wild animals. Several years later, Sandy assisted in founding and funding the non profit so it could expand and grow and be a full time, all species, all situation facility.

Sandy Mahl also appeared in the documentary, Garth: The Road I’m On in 2019. The series showed the life and career of Garth and his wife, Trisha.
In the documentary, Sandy revealed the time she and her ex-husband had spent away from each other.
I was gone so much on the road, there were things I guess she was trying to tell me that I didn’t hear until this biography. It’s rare you get to hear the other side.
After he got to know about his wife’s thoughts, he became happier than ever; not because they broke up, but because he got to know what his wife really felt.
I just saw her and I think I hugged her harder than I ever have now that I know things that either I didn’t hear or that she didn’t say until now.
Cancer Survivor
Sandy Mahl has once beaten cancer. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. Fortunately, she survived!
Kidnapped at Gunpoint
Sandy has been kidnapped at gunpoint. In 2006, a man working on her Oklahoma property kidnapped her on blank point while trying to evade a bail bondsman.
She was forced to drive several miles. When the car stopped, she fled into a convenience store. The man was later arrested.
