Jose Trinidad Marin AKA Trino Marin is known for being the ex-husband of the late singer, Jenni Rivera. He is also known for sexually abusing his sister-in-law and daughters.

Marin was born on February 15, 1964, in Mexico but, he later moved to the USA with his parents.

Was Married to Jenni Rivera

Jose Trinidad Marin started dating singer Jenni Rivera when the former was 20 and the latter was 15. The pair dated for a few years and married several months after giving birth to their first child.

Marin started working as a restaurant manager after working several jobs and began pressuring his wife to leave college and stay at home with their three children.

Jenni, however, had different plans for her life. Due to this, they started getting distant. Marin resorted to physical violence and in 1992, the duo parted ways. He was even charged with battery a year later.

Father of Three

Trino Marin is the father of three children; Janney, Jacquelin Melina, and Michael Marin Rivera.

Janney was born on June 26, 1985, when Jenni was still in high school. Janney, now known as Chiquis Rivera, is a singer-songwriter with three studio albums.

Trino and Jenni’s second child, Jacquelin Melina Marin AKA Jacqie Campos was born on November 20, 1989. Jacqie is now married to Michael ‘Mike’ Campos and has a daughter, Jaylah Hope Yanez. She’s also a singer with seven songs to her name.

Their youngest child, Michael Marin Rivera was born on September 11, 1991. He is now an artist and goes by the moniker, Michelangelo.

Molestation and Sexual Assault

After the divorce of Jenni Rivera and Jose Trinidad Marin, Rosie Rivera (Jenni’s sister) revealed that she and their eldest daughter, Chiquis Rivera had been sexually abused by Marin. Physical examinations also concluded that their youngest daughter, Jacqie Campos was also his victim.

He started abusing Rosie when she was seven and his eldest daughter when she was eight. The incident took place between 1988 and 1997.

While talking to Univision, Rosie revealed that she was first abused when she and her niece were playing Barbies.

Chiquis and I were playing Barbies, and he came in. He asked her to go out and asked me if I wanted to play, “Let’s play love games,” and brought a quilt. He began to kiss my neck and touch where no one had touched me.

Jose first abused his eldest daughter in a bathroom and ended it after his live-in girlfriend, Dora, told him his daughter started menstruating.

We were coming from the beach and when I went to the bathroom to bathe and get the sand out, he came in and placed me naked between his legs. There it happened for the first time.

Chiquis revealed the abuse in her memoir, Forgiveness, that released on April 7, 2015, via Atria Books.

My father would take advantage of those weekends, exploiting my silence more and more while simultaneously becoming ever more aggressive. His growing boldness translated into longer, more fearsome and more painful sessions for me. All I remember is closing my eyes, tensing up my arms and thinking: ‘If I don’t put up too much of a fight, then he’ll be done with me sooner.’

Rivera accused Jose of assault in 1997. Marin fled and became a fugitive for around nine years until he was arrested in April 2006. He was detained from his home after the Riverside County police received a tip about his hideout.

The trial began on April 30, 2007.

31 Years in Prison

During the trial, the Marins and the Riveras clashed verbally in the courthouse and it resulted in increased security at the trial.

We were sometimes a problem, because, I guess, because there was so much emotion involved.

Jenni apologized to the Judge about her family’s courtroom behavior.

Jose, who was out on a $1 million bail, wore a blue prison uniform during his sentencing in Long Beach Superior Court. Judge Joan Comparet-Cassani convicted him on May 9, 2007, for eight counts including three counts of lewd act upon a child, three counts of oral copulation of a child, one count of continuous sexual assault, and one count of aggravated sexual assault.

Though he was charged, he denied all claims and refrained from making any statements. In one of his prior statements, he even said that the case was his ex-wife’s publicity stunt.

During the trial, Chiquis revealed that she refused to testify against her father because he had threatened to send her to Mexico to live with his mother.

I was afraid that my mom would get very angry and possibly, I don’t know… I felt that she would probably kill him or something, and she would go to jail, and he would be dead. I didn’t know where I was going to be. I was just afraid.

Prior to being sentenced to 31 years, Jose’s attorney, Richard Poland, requested that the case be dismissed because his client didn’t get his right to a speedy trial. He claimed that the Long Beach police didn’t try hard enough to find his client.

At the moment, Trino is serving his time in prison. However, there were rumors of his release in 2018; credit to his good behavior.

In the United States prison, where Trino Marín, Jenni Rivera’s first husband, remains, his sentence was reduced by half and he will be released in the coming months, despite the fact that he raped two of his daughters. One of them, La Chiquis, since she was two years old, and also her sister-in-law Rosie Rivera, since she was 7 years old.

When there were rumors of Jose’s release, Rosie revealed in an interview that she has already absolved the crimes of her late sister’s former partner.

Death of Ex-Wife

Trino Marin’s ex-wife, Jenni Rivera died in a plane crash near Monterrey, Mexico on December 9, 2012. Six people including the singer were killed in the Learjet 25 plane crash.

The officials couldn’t determine the cause of the accident even after a thorough investigation. Loss of control of the aircraft was claimed as the probable cause of the accident later on.

Rivera was buried on December 31, 2012, at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, California.
