Writer and Cast of “Home Team”
Christopher Titone is the writer and actor of the Netflix sports comedy, Home Team which was released on January 28, 2022. The film is trending at No. 4 on Netflix’s top 10 list as of this writing.
Home Team is based on his girlfriend’s father, Sean Payton‘s story after his one-year suspension in 2012. Sean (portrayed by Kevin James) returns to his hometown during his suspension and ends up coaching his son, Connor Payton‘s (played by Tait Blum) 6th-grade football team.
During an interview with Pop Culture, Chris revealed that the idea of making a movie about Sean’s one-year suspension started after his girlfriend and Sean’s daughter, Meghan covered a story about it on the NFL Network.
My girlfriend, Meghan Payton, actually came up with it. She was working at NFL Network, and she did a small feature piece. It was four or five minutes long, on NFL Network, about this story, about Sean, what he did with his time off. And they aired it, and I learned a lot about it.
Titone’s brother-in-law, Adam Sandler encouraged him to write that movie after he saw the NFL Network feature piece. He wrote the story, presented it to Sean and the NFL, and got a green light from both parties.
I’ve known Sean for six years. I’ve been with Meghan for six years. So I know him pretty well. I think the most surprising part about him and the NFL is how cool they were with what I wrote. It’s a touchy subject, and you never know if Sean’s going to be like, ‘Eh, don’t write that.’ Or the NFL’s going to be like, ‘Nope. You ain’t getting the way that.’ Because they had to sign off on this, of course. And they were both really, really cool. No roadblocks.
